1. Be concise. For each post, ask yourself “what are the three smart things I have to say about this subject?” Say them in 300-500 words
2. Make it professional and easy to read. Make sure you:
Spell-check your posts before publishing them
Use bullet points where necessary
Create sub-headings for longer, in-depth posts
If you are doing a list post, separate the points with bold headings for people who scan / skim
Include paragraph breaks after every 3 or 4 sentences
Read the post yourself to see that it all flows properly
3. Continue the conversation. Every blog post will have a counterpart thread in the forum. In order to ensure that your ideas and presentation skills benefit from community feedback, you will be responsible for responding to comments on threads related to your blogs with thoughtful commentary that ignites further discussion
4. Be responsible for your own success. This blog project is a chance to practice your relationship development skills. You are responsible for having at least five comments from unique visitors on each of your threads. You can achieve this through three strategies, which you should implement concurrently: (1) comment on the threads of other community bloggers in order to enact the principle of reciprocity, (2) reach out to friends, family and colleagues offline and ask them to support you and benefit from the knowledge you are providing by logging on to the forums and commenting, and (3) become an active participant (not a spammer) in other online communities and invite those you have interactions with to check out your forum threads
5. Commit to a schedule. To help you stay on track to achieve your goals, you will be asked to post regularly on the same day either weekly or bimonthly.
6. Make this a safe place. Avoid any suggestion of racist, sexist or religious bias, or any suggestion of nasty, snide, sarcastic, or condescending tone — “snark.”
7. Make it visual. Make sure every post has a picture or video attached to it.
After you have made several thoughtful comments in the forum, recruit two people to sign up for the forums. Now you are a community builder.
Submit your application to become a blogger by messaging Bart Eshuis (beshuis) . Application should include:
An appropriate headshot to be used on your posts
Your first blog post
The usernames of the two people you brought into the community
4. Once you have been approved as a blogger, you will be given a blog on the site. Your blogs will need to be approved before posting. The approval process will include editing for grammar, spelling, structure and length.
